CFL light bulbs are called energy efficient bulbs because they use less energy than incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light. The reason for this is that the incandescent lamps lose a large amount of energy in the form of heat for heating the tungsten filament lamp enough to produce light. CLFS do not need as much electrical power to excite the gas inside the bulb to produce light. A side effect is that CFL light bulbs tend to produce less heat than incandescent bulbs, although they can still be hot enough to burn the skin.
